Spearfish, located in the northern Black Hills, is a year-round playground for outdoor adventure. With five convenient exits off Interstate 90 and a wealth of quality places to stay, it is the place to call home during your Black Hills vacation – anytime, any season.
Incorporated in 1888, the first residents of Spearfish gazed up at the ring of pine-clad hills and rocky bluffs that surrounded the community and noted how they looked like a crown. For this reason, they coined the name “Queen City” for their new town. The name is still used today, and the community continues to thrive as an outdoor recreational paradise, a center for art and culture and home to Black Hills State University.
If you are looking for a lighter adventure, a drive through Spearfish Canyon National Scenic Byway is a relaxing way to recharge every month of the year. Frank Lloyd Wright described the uniqueness of the Canyon as no one else has:
“But how is it that I’ve heard so little of this miracle and we, toward the Atlantic, have heard so much of the Grand Canyon when this is even more miraculous. All the better eventually…that the Dakotas are not on the through line to the Coast…”
