Visit D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery
Established in 1896, D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives was constructed to propagate, stock, and establish trout populations in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Visitors can get up close and personal with brown and rainbow trout by feeding them from above or watching them through the underwater viewing windows.

Spearfish Canyon is the Northern Hill’s number one natural attraction. A great spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as the diverse array of plant life provides a comfortable home for deer, mountain goats, porcupines and bobcats, Spearfish Canyon is also a place for outdoor enthusiasts. Rock climbing, biking, hiking and fishing are just a few of the activities that visitors and residents utilize this natural wonder for. Passersby can see the canyon en route to other Black Hills attractions on US Highway 14A, which winds through the canyon for nearly 20 miles from the city of Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing. Built on top of an old rail bed, the highway affords visitors views of pristine natural wonders and historical treasures.
Tour Homestake Visitor Center and Open Cut Mine
First settled in 1876, and then incorporated in 1877, Lead (pronounced “leed”) was long the home of the great Homestake Mining Company, and the town that was built by and for the thousands of Homestake employees and their families has remained unchanged in many ways. The Homestake Mine has now been shut down but the Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is in full development and promises a lively future for the community. With its rich history and promising future, Lead boasts small town charm with large potential!

Deadwood’s roots go back to 1876 when outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice came to town looking for gold and a good time. Deadwood still knows how to have a good time today from free Wild West re-enactments to wild nightlife. Visitors to Spearfish are greeted by the timeless, familiar storefronts and historic buildings characteristic of Main Street, but with the added bonus of a fresh, picturesque streetscape. Main Street offers plenty of options for any shopper: clothing, antiques, organic food, outdoor sporting goods, coffee shops, cafes, wine bars and more can all be found in the downtown area. The historic Matthews Opera House and Art Gallery accents the city’s varied arts community with year-round programs and art exhibits.
